EDucation

I will fight for a state education budget that pays a fair and equitable share of education costs, because it is the right thing to do and because it will be my constitutional duty as a Texas legislator to do so.  As the Texas Constitution states, “It shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools.”

  • The state once covered 50% of Texas’ education costs, it now pays an average of only 37% and asks our communities to make up the difference.

  • If the state had kept per pupil spending at the same level as 10 years ago, the state would have contributed an additional $18.6 billion to public education, which would have enabled local communities to keep property taxes lower.

  • I supported SB 2118 that the legislature recently passed allowing Collin College in my district to offer nursing degrees.  And I support additional legislation allowing community colleges, like Collin College in my district, to choose to offer four year degrees in critical fields.

  • Only 29% of 8th graders in Collin County complete a higher education program within 6 years of their expected high school graduation date.

  • I will oppose voucher systems as they would divert revenue from our public schools, which legislators have a constitutional duty to support, and, send it to for-profit private institutions, which legislators have no constitutional duty to support.

"I will be a Senator who supports our public school system, builds the infrastructure our future demands, supports the growth of good jobs, ensures affordable college education, and works for a Texas we can all believe in."
